Andy Ard • Music for Living, Loving, Dancing and Whatnot

So do you. Music matters. Every atom in the universe is simply a pattern of vibrations; we are literally composed of music.

That means we are hard-wired for harmony, rhythm and melody. Sometimes that gets lofty, but just as often it means shaking your booty. You don’t need a lesson on how important music is to you; it’s in your DNA. Our genes are variations on an eternal theme.

What am I getting at? Why is this on the front page?

Simply this: Artists are pressed to describe what they do. Commercial interests demand that we pin our sound down to a familiar genre. That’s great for program directors, but not at all helpful for people who create music and people who might enjoy it if they could find it. Artists sometimes reshape their music to fit into one of the existing bins, when they would otherwise create more authentic works.

I enjoy a wide variety of music, and love ragged electric guitar as much as soulful acoustic, classical, and many other styles. These influences show up in my songs, but that is difficult to explain, at least for me. I have written snappy pop gems, haunting acoustic numbers, film soundtracks and chamber music for the White House. How does one encapsulate all that in a category and promote it?

I’m trying the straight approach — let the music speak for itself. It’s a gamble, sure.

But you get to pick the numbers. If you like the music, it works. It works even better if you share the music with people who also might like it. That gives me the opportunity to keep doing it.

Thank you for visiting, and I hope you enjoy the music. After all, we (you, me & all the subatomic particles) made it together.

I live and breathe music.
